Creative therapies and counselling for children
When children are struggling they usually show us with their behaviour. They may experience angry “meltdowns”, difficulties getting to sleep, they may stop wanting to go to school and have lots of worries about what seems to be little things. Some children may become quiet, withdrawn and stop doing things they previously enjoyed. All of these things can affect their learning, their friendships and their relationships with other family members.
I offer counselling to children from the age of four years of age. As all children are busy growing and learning about their world, their minds and brains haven’t yet managed to develop enough to be able to recognise and fully understand everything going on around them. This includes their ability to understand and manage their feelings. They don’t yet have all the words they need to be able to clearly express themselves.
During our sessions, I am able to use a creative and playful approach where children are given the opportunity to show me their feelings by what they do and how they are during our meetings, rather than having to just use their words. Some children, of course prefer to speak about what they feel is going on in their lives. All of this helps them to develop their understanding of themselves, their feelings and their relationships. It means that they no longer need to show us their feeling with perhaps worrying and difficult to manage behaviour.
I counsel children who may be struggling with feelings of stress, anxiety, sadness, anger, problems with going to school and being in the classroom, bullying, friendship difficulties, and changes in the family, such as divorce, bereavement, separation, or a new baby at home.
